SAM-e! Does anyone have experience with this?

Does anyone have experience with this?

It's supposed to help mood (and joints), but there is also an extensive body of research that shows that SAM-e is good for the liver. I was just wondering, since so many docs are worried about long term abs (eg. Azith) due to concern over the liver. Perhaps it would make sense to add on Sam-e to protect the liver?

I didn't know it had liver health properties. We used it for a couple of months, years ago, for mood. I don't think it did anything for mood and its kinda pricy so we discontinued. But that was way back before we knew about PANDAS, so Allie was still dealing with a lot of fluctuating behaviors and was likely on risperdal at the time. Wish I'd kept better (or some) records.

On the other hand, Allie has been on zith for a long time, with frequent diflucan use (not to mention 3 courses of rifampin) and we have not seen any problems with liver function. We do test periodically to be on the safe side.

Hi Peg,

here is a link that discusses some of the research:

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag97/june-report972.html

Here is a veterinary site:

http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&C=31&A=1319&S=0

It's kind of interesting, if you look at the reviews on Amazon for doggie/kitty SAM-e (there are several versions, denosyl is one http://www.amazon.com/Denosyl-Small-Dogs-Cats-Count/product-reviews/B00028ZM4E/ref=cm_cr_dp_synop?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending#R2OUJFY4IH4AF2 ) you see all sorts of comments like "my vet recommended this for my cat's liver diseaase", "it saved my dog's life". I don't know if human medicine has caught on to using it to help/protect the liver like vet. medicine has?
