Sibling showing signs

Recommended Posts

My 5 yo thus far non pandas child has started urinating frequently for over a month now. His older sibling has pitands, with both strep and myco p as factors for her.

All the urine cultures and analyses are normal, as was an ultrasound of his abdomen. We are going to a ped urologist to check any other issues as well. He was treated for two weeks with augmentin, getting worse with the symptom while on it, and two weeks on zithromax, having no positive or negative responses to it. He has started with some separation anxiety recently as well, really leading me to pandas or pitands for him as well. First ASO and dnaseb normal, will retest soon. Myco p not detected. I have a mommy gut feeling he may be reacting to some dyes as well, which had never been the case before that I noticed. I have to ask about compounding pharmacies to get no dye meds.

So what would you do? Would you try a different antibiotic? Would you just go prophylactic and give it time? Would you do a steroid trial? Would you try OLE?

How much augmentin and zithromax was he on? How much does he weigh? Another antibiotic that seems to work well is Omnicef. If it was my child I would most likely give them the highest dose possible of zithromax for a full 2 weeks and see if they improved.

Those behaviors are very suspicious of PANDAS or PITANDS.

EA mom, my son is probably the hardest child in God's green earth to do a throat culture on. His throat looked good both to me and the doctor, realizing that doesn't mean much. The doctor tried, but with it looking good, we decided on the blood test, which he did fine with.

Colleen, he weighs 40 lbs, and he was on a full strep dose (5ml) of zith for a full two weeks.

We are in a similar situation, with my 5yo showing episodic OCD, sensory, urinary/yeast issues, unfounded fears and the habit of being exactly in your shadow every minute. Not wanting to go down the same horrible path my DS8 went thru (he was treated for Pandas for 2 yrs, then recently dx with Bartonella), we took DD to our LLMD yesterday. He is re-testing her for lyme (we tested her in Aug along with DS and she had a few positive bands but not overly "lymey") but also testing for Candida yeast, which can also cause neuro symptoms. Lyme can cause urinary and gut issues, but so can many other things.

We've had plenty of cultures, tests for UTIs, visits to GI docs and an endoscope - nothing found. But our doctor agreed that something is not right. If symptoms continue, I'd consider an LLMD or naturopath or osteopath - someone who looks at the whole body as opposed to a specialist. This could be many things, but it is probably not "normal" and I think you're right to keep pursuing. Best of luck!

Thanks LLM! I actually suspect yeast in my son. He craves sweets, obsesses over them for short amounts of time. He only likes to eat carbs, mac n cheese, grilled cheese. What is the candida testing? Is it a stool test? I also suspect sensitivity to dyes. That said, I cannot go anywhere without ruling out infections. Our dd has surprised us with infections.

His diet sounds just like my daughter's (and my son's for that matter, tho he does not have yeast problems). Put anything remotely suspicious of being healthy in front of her and it's like I'm asking her to drink poison. Thank goodness for vitamins.

We're doing both stool and blood tests for a variety of things (10 vials of blood, 3 days in a row of poop collection). The LLMD is sending the poop test to a co. that works with our insurance and will guarantee that regardless of whatever our ins. covers or doesn't, our out-of-pocket to them will be capped at $189. It's looking for signs of yeast, signs to see how her body is digesting things, Ph balance and a bunch of stuff I didn't follow. Will know more when we get results. But there's also a blood test for Candida via Quest (which was negative for DS).

Agree you also need to rule out infections.

As an FYI - after poop test is collected, we will start DD on Tru-flora - a commercially available probiotic mix that supposedly kills candida, not by crowding it out but by actually destroying the candida. We are to start with 1/2 capsule for one week, then full capsule once a day for 2 weeks, then twice a week prophylactically after that. LLMD warned that if she has yeast, we could see a die-off and increase in symptoms - thus we start with half a capsule at first. I believe you can buy Tru-flora from the co's website. But if you're wanting to test first, don't start it until after you've done the tests.

mom - we've suspected in our daughter multiple times. We started a symptom tracking log with her just like we use for our son. We've been watching her for some time now. We're now convinced she has a mild case. Very mild (fortunately). She seems to have symptoms when she's sick, but as soon as the infection clears, she's immediately back to her old self. We haven't sought treatments for PANDAS specifically for her yet, since it clears when the infection clears.

But it has given us a good clue as to when she's really sick or if she's just faking!! (She's a big faker to try to get to stay home from school ^_^ )
