Does anyone see a Neuropsychologist? We see a Neurologist and a Psychiatrist.

Posted

We had a full evaluation by a neuropsyc ($$$) last spring. As we told our son, it was to figure out what he was good at and what things were difficult for him. There was full psychological evaluation (result: OCD,depression/bipolar,sensory processing disorder, dysgraphia), full academic achievement testing, and intelligence testing. One of the most dramatic results was that his processing speeds were extremely low (<1st percentile) but that the other measures of intelligence (logical/mathematical reasoning, visual/spatial reasoning) were very high. Now that we know he has Pandas, the slow processing speeds make a lot more sense. Some of the problem with the slow processing was that he had to keep stopping to do tics/compulsions.

Anyway, if your insurance will pay for it, I highly recommend a full neuropsyc evaluation. It helps a lot with knowing what to focus on in school and what therapies may help. When (positive thinking!!) my son gets better, we will probably repeat the testing.

I am not sure if you are asking about a neruopsychologist (PhD person who tests for learning disabilities, ADHD, attention problems and such) or if you are talking about a neurpsychiatrist (MD specializing in neurology and mental health).

We see a neuropsychiatrist every few years for testing and to give us direction for school. So far, insurance has paid, so it has been very worthwhile. Ours is specialized in tourette, and she was the ONLY local clinician to believe my son had PANDAS right from the start!
