Started Augmentin Today: Praying

Recommended Posts

I'm so excited. My son was prescribed 875mg of Augmentin 2 times a day for 21 days to start and then have a follow -up. If he is doing well she will probably continue it, but she isn't 100 percent on board with doing it forever.

How long before most see a change?

Should I start probiotics immediately?

Would adding OLE be too much on top of Augmentin?

What would those with experience recommend as far as probiotics goes?

Timing on Antibiotic, Probiotic, Supplements.

Has anyone gone Gluten Free and seen good results?

Sorry for all the questions. I have read some of the old threads but just wanted some to chime in now as to what worked best for them. Thanks.

Wow, isn't it strange how an rx for abx can make us so happy?

I think it varies from a day to a couple of weeks. Hope you see improvement soon!

Should I start probiotics immediately?

I'd start them right away. Bacterial probiotics should be given at least 2 hours after abx, so the abx doesn't kill it. If you use s. boulardii, you can give it at the same time as the abx-its a good yeast.

I don't have any response to your other questions, but I'm sure somebody will.

Hi Cindi,

I'll try to answer based on our experience.

1) Our son saw very gradual improvement, nothing dramatic that I can give a time frame on

2) Start probiotics right away

3) Some say the OLE can make the antibiotics less effective, so I would at least do a couple of weeks of just Augmentin

4) We like the Klaire Labs probiotics (www.prothera.inc)

5) Keep probiotics as far away from antibiotics as you can. We do abx with breakfast and dinner, and try to do probiotics lunch and bedtime

6) We have gone gluten free and seen good results. We also did a food sensitivity test and he is indeed sensitive to milk and gluten.

Hope you see great improvements but don't expect it to be overnight.

Praying...

Isabel

How long before most see a change?

Initially, we were in such "depths" of dysfunctionality, we saw an improvement in mood, emotional lability and contamination OCD within just about 48 hours, believe it or not! If you have the same "bounce," though, don't get discouraged if/when the pace slows down or even takes a step backward for every two steps forward. Keep a journal, and so long as you can see SOME improvement, don't give up. Our DS was on full-dose Augmentin for a solid year, and the improvements continued to come slowly.

Should I start probiotics immediately?

I would, especially if your child has any gastro issues, either generally or anxiety-related.

Would adding OLE be too much on top of Augmentin?

Sorry, don't know. I guess my main concern would be that 1) it might cause more gastric upset, and/or 2) it might make it harder to determine the actual efficacy of the Augmentin.

What would those with experience recommend as far as probiotics goes?

Anything with bifodolpholus, sach b. and/or lactobillus is good (Culturelle, FloraStor, Jarrow); just know that the most common form, acidolpholus, found in yogurt and kefir, is readily killed by antibiotics so they usually can't do the job alone and have to be spaced out (2 hours before or after) to be of any real assistance.

Timing on Antibiotic, Probiotic, Supplements.

I think regular Augmentin they suggest you dose with food, so breakfast and dinner should be good, right? Sach b. can be given with an antibiotic and still be effective, and I'm told lactobillus can, as well. Generally, I give these two with breakfast, alongside the Augmentin, but then I make sure he gets a couple of probiotics again with his snack after school and as he turns in. Supplements, for us, are also breakfast and dinner.

Has anyone gone Gluten Free and seen good results?

We tried gluten free, but along with everything else we were dealing with, it just didn't seem to be worth it. It felt like adding insult to injury to restrict his favorite foods at the same time he was dealing with massive OCD and anxiety, as well as asking him to pop all these capsules of meds and supplements all day! I know some people feel they get really good results from gluten free, so I'm not discouraging it; just saying it was just another burden to our DS in the depths of exacerbation.

Good luck, Cindi! Hope you have good results! :)

Defintely keep a journal as already mentioned and consider adding a rating system for the symptoms. Even if there is a step backwards you can see the overall progress that has been made from the beginning of treatment. For example, we rate our son from 1-5 on mood, OCD, anxiety, handwashing, tics etc.

Way to go blessed mom! Right now I give culturelle for kids (easy to buy at Walgreens or Walmart) and Florastor (behind counter at pharm). I have been looking into more comprehensive probiotics like Theralac, and Custom Probiotics.

My dd is on zithromax and I did try to give her OLE and her tic got worse so I stopped it.

Keep researching and printing information out to give your doctor. Go to the links at the top of the forum and print stuff out. Print out the NIMH document validating pandas. Give your doc a copy of Saving Sammy to keep.

I hope your son responds. 21 days is a good start. For us, our doctor had to see our dd get worse going off abx or even going lower dose before she kept up the high dose. In the end it has to be clinical, just what works for your kid no matter what the research says.

Praying for you too!
