Incredible thirst. Need to drink water

Recommended Posts

In January, 2007 my son was exposed to Group A strep by his brother. They both were very sick. Only his brother tested positive for strep. Only his brother got the antibiotic. After this, the son who did not get the antibiotic developed a need to drink water ALL OF THE TIME. He was constantly asking for water. I was very concerned. I took him to the pediatrician because I was concerned about diabetes. He did not have diabetes. This went on for three months before he got PANDAS overnight. So, this leads me to wonder if any of your children had this symptom.

Our DS13 has a similar "thirst habit," and the more anxious he is, the "thirstier" he seems to be. He actually reaches for the water bottle when he's feeling anxious . . . says drinking helps him calm down. So the water bottle is ever-present during homework, especially. I don't know if it's that sucking from the sports bottle makes him take a quick break and that assists him, or if hydration is really an issue. He has neither diabetes nor excessive sweating.

I would say my ds probably did/does consume more water. I've noticed him getting drinks from the bathroom during this current exacerbation. Back in the spring, he would say he was really hungry too.

So the frequent urination symptom could be the very obvious byproduct of increased fluids? We did have that symptom. To go further, the adrenal glands are on top of the kidneys, so could they also be affecting the urge somehow due to their funtion in fight/flight/fear/stress response? My son started saying his "heart was pumpy" a lot when he was first being affected. He angered more easily, and it was more intense. I was actually researching adrenal tumors & brain tumors before I found PANDAS. Really need to take an anatomy class!

yes, when ds had first onset -- he was incredibly thirsty. he was 4.5 and in preschool. they had a snack section they could go to at any time to get a drink. i'd pick him up at 11:30 and he was literally crying saying he was so thirsty. i started bringing him a water bottle that was 8 oz and he'd down it in a few minutes. he wasn't previously and isn't since really much of a drinker.

of course, he had pandas behaviors plus some things that are also considered yeast symptoms, which we were first investigating. i think thirst can also be a sign of yeast overgrowth - ? - . i'd definitely say i think it's a pandas symptom.

My son would drink and drink and drink water and not urinate all day. I was very concerned. How is that possible? After his pandas exploded, he stopped drinking and then the frequent urination started. I actually think that he was holding his urine in. It must have been so uncomfortable. i think it was OCD.

Norcal..Can i ask a question?

if the sweating is pandas related....do you think it is the virus/strep doing something to sweat glands or the adrenals...

or some other mechanism
