Leg pain with strep

Recommended Posts

This has probably been covered somewhere already, but so many of us mention it, I wondered what kind of response I would get. For Pixie, leg pain ALWAYS means strep. I wish I had known this earlier, but even when it was bad enough to warrant a doctor's visit (and I thought her behavior was bad because she was in pain-- pre-PANDAS dx, of course), they just dismissed it as growing pains or wanting attention.

Who else gets leg pain with positive strep?

Yep, migratory joint pain, muscle weakness (especially the legs), and difficulty walking were among our son's 1st symptoms. Those are pretty classic on the rheumatic fever end of the ARF / SC / PANDAS spectrum. I used to spend lots of time on an SC forum, and this was very commonly described there.

Leg pain can also mean Lyme, bartonella or babesia. Thigh cramps, calf cramps, shin pain , muscle pain or sore soles of the feet are often signs of a tickborne illness. I would not assume it is just strep but have an ilads doctor evaluate. The right antibiotics can make a huge difference if a tick orne illness involved. Lyme is also the fastest growing infectious disease and people are get g it from coast to coast so it is not rare.

I totally concur. We assumed DS's leg aches, pains, limping, muscle spasms were 1st growing pains, then strep but now we know its Bartonella for sure. His legs are getting better day by day since we started treatment.

We had a HUGE iron deficiency and that can be Bartonella or Babesia and Magnesium deficiency can be Lyme or Bartonella.

You should cast your net far and wide just to be sure you're not missing something. Treating for strep will seem to help and supplementing will also seem to help but it may come back. Many strep meds can also be used to treat Lyme and coinfections so the relief you may see could be all temporary.

A MILLION grateful thank yous to the moms on this forum for pointing me in the right direction after 1.5 years of wandering from specialist to specialist for the leg aches, limping and pains.

I have a Lyme specialist appointment in 2 weeks for me. We apparently only have 1 lyme dr in the state, so there is something of a wait. I know she definitely reacts to strep, and while I am not ruling out Lyme without investigation, I'm not putting all my eggs in the Lyme basket just yet either, so to speak ;) But thank you for mentioning that it can also be related. I do have some pain in the soles of my own feet and now I know to bring this up at that appointment as well.
