rowingmom got a reaction from Frazzled in Daughter's Update: Buhner's bartonella/babesia protocols
DD13 is doing wonderfully! Three years ago I would not have believed that she could improve to the extent she has. She has lost all cognitive/executive impairments and her Tourette's is only suggestible (if I ask if she needs to tic she will have to - motor only, no vocals), and not otherwise visible. Going back to school has not resulted in any sort of relapse.

We were at the cottage this weekend and without me asking she got out her homework (Grade 8) and reviewed (reworked) 30 math questions for a test that she has today. She packed the homework herself, got it up to the cottage and took full responsibility for studying. She worked for at least 3 hours. Neat and tidy writing, organized work area. At dinner time she admitted that she was having trouble with one question, but that she felt after dinner when she had had a break that she would figure it out - and she did. No screaming or crying. No throwing things or raging. Absolutely no frustration; just confidence. It was truly amazing!

This was a child that 3 years ago (Grade 5) I had to physically dress, brush teeth, tie shoes, pack backpack, pick up homework from school and work through unfinished school work/homework one on one because of ADD. She had an IEP and the help of the classroom EA. She sat behind a screen and wore ear plugs to decrease distraction. She was removed from the classroom for testing and had an EA sit with her to redirect her attention. She had an EA or another student go to the bathroom with her because she would become distracted and forget to go back to class. She had to eat lunch in the special needs classroom so the teacher there could redirect her to eating; otherwise her lunch would return uneaten.

Her printing was huge and messy and her books covered with doodled pictures (the same one over and over - her OCD). She raged, she screamed, she hit, she was socially withdrawn and regressed. She was so fatigued, dizzy and in so much pain that she had to sit out of gym class, or sit on the curb watching the neighbourhood children play. She had Tourette's so badly at times that she couldn't read because of head snapping/bobbing/eye rolling, and often couldn't give presentations in class because her vocals were so bad. A couple of times her Grade 6 teacher would recount this to me and cry, she felt so sorry for our daughter.

Her improvement has been nothing short of a miracle.

We are maintaining low doses of Buhner's bartonella protocol (minus l-arginine), I am still messing about with the babesia herbs. Both DD and I are reacting very strongly to bidens (1 drop 3x daily) (which Buhner says is not supposed to be as potent as cryptolepis), with brain herxes (dizziness, brain fog), but with the help of Julie McIntyre we are still seeing improvement.

One thing that I found to be a surprise was Julie's recommendation of cilantro/zeolite for detox. I put off using cilantro for about 8 months. One because I thought it was baloney (you'd think I'd know better by now), and two because I couldn't find an organic source. Well I found an organic tincture source, and as soon as I started using it (1 drop 3x daily) our daughter's remaining symptoms declined noticeably (that is, even my husband noticed).

I messed about and ended up being too enthusiastic (10 drops 3x daily) which resulted in a yeast infection (googling revealed that the gut may overgrow yeast to protect the body from too many metals being dumped into the intestine at once). Instead of using zeolite we are using Diatomaceous Earth; we may switch to zeolite (which Julie swears by, and she hasn't led us astray yet - except for dosages which are very tricky for us (we find 1/4 of recommended dosage to be best).

The amazing thing is that during a recent trip which entailed a week's stay in a "free wireless" hotel (meaning wireless is EVERYWHERE) both our daughter and I were unaffected by the EMF's. We are usually quite electrosensitive. Previous trips to wireless available buildings (museums, hotels, restaurants, malls etc.) generally resulted in an increase in symptoms for our daughter (especially ticcing, fatigue and headache to the point of having to sit down and rest) and palpitations/anxiety for me. I was not looking forward to staying in the hotel, and neither was our daughter, but after our first night there we realized that we weren't being impacted to the extent that we had been. We actually slept like logs!

Cilantro and clays are used in many natural metal detox remedies; and it would make sense that removing metal burden from the body would decrease reaction to electromagnetic frequencies.

No child should have to suffer the pain, fatigue and cognitive dysfunction that DD has had to endure, but I have learned so much from this journey:

That mainstream medicine may not be the be-all, end-all.

That bacteria are not the only problem, that compromised immune/detoxification systems are responsible for symptoms as well.

That our children are being poisoned by the pesticides in their food (big agriculture) and by the metals/adjuvants in the 70 (!) vaccines now recommended by experts (mainstream medicine / big pharmaceutical companies).

No large corporations/conglomerations are ever again going to tell me what is best for me or my family.

Although in the past I would have considered myself nuts to even suggest this to anyone else (let alone believe it myself), I now read several alternative health sites:

This is why we do not vaccinate anymore. I have not vaccinated my 3 youngest kids. They are smart, social and understanding kids. My 2 oldest, born in the 90's when vaccines were loaded with mercury, have been adversely affected.

rowingmom got a reaction from mama2alex in Vaccine exposure, gut microbiome and MDR strep serotype
Very interesting reading from AoA Contributing Editor Teresa Conrick:
"A particularly notable finding in our study is the 900% increase in noninvasive pediatric vaccine-related isolates that was associated with serotypes 19A...serotype 19A frequently recovered from middle ear fluid specimens. ● It is noteworthy that serotype 19A—the original multidrug-resistant serotype reported from South Africa in 1978 [41]—emerged in the United States after the introduction of PCV7 in 2000, and many of these isolates are multidrug resistant."
"Vaccination with PCV-7 resulted in a shift in bacterial community composition and structure, with an increase in presence or abundance of several anaerobes, such as Veillonella, Prevotella, Fusobacterium, and Leptotrichia species; gram-positive bacteria, such as Actinomyces and Rothia species, and nonpneumococcal streptococci; and gram-negative Neisseria species…. Together with S. pneumoniae nonvaccine serotype replacement, these effects may further jeopardize the net health benefit of vaccinations with PCV.”
Vaccination is likely to have important consequences for the NP microbiome. Current pneumococcal vaccines are directed against multiple serotypes thus potentially eliminating these from the microbiome. Based on observations on this and other vaccines, new organisms are expected to move into the empty niches created by vaccine elimination of organisms. Thus the structure of the microbiome is altered by vaccines. The unintended consequences of this alteration remain to be seen.
It seems very possible that if the microbiome takes a hit, like mercury exposure or immune manipulation via vaccination, the more we may see the immune system diseases rapidly rise. Autism and PANDAS/PANS and other immune-damaged diseases deserve huge concern and true research."
"... here are studies showing how it is the microbiome, not genes, that will lead the way in helping so many stricken with these symptoms:
    • That veil is only very recently being lifted with respect to a potential role for autoimmunity in neuropsychiatric disorders. This shift has occurred as evidence accumulates to support the idea that dysregulated cross-talk between the brain and the immune system is an important contributor to the pathogenesis of conditions as diverse as schizophrenia, mood disorders, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anorexia nervosa, narcolepsy, posttraumatic stress disorder and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).[4,5] In addition, intriguing new evidence lends support to the possibility that not only the microbes associated with infectious episodes but also the bacteria of the gut microbiome can foster the production of brain-reactive autoantibodies, and that these microbe-induced antibodies provide the critical link between infection and neuropsychiatric disorders.
    • ….Eventually, as more pathogens are incorporated into the microbiome and levels of dysbiosis increase, people begin to present with symptoms characteristic of an autoimmune or inflammatory diagnosis......There is increasing evidence that autoimmune diseases run in families due to the sharing of common microbes.... The microbiome a child develops is a direct reflection of those harbored by the mother and close relatives. Microbes are introduced by a multitude of sources including the placenta, sperm, egg, breast milk, and vaginal canal.[37] …. Autoimmune diseases are more likely passed in families due to inheritance of the familial microbiome than inheritance of Mendelian genetic abnormalities.”
"Note that the above study refers to "regressive-type" autism as a disease. I have watched my own daughter suffer for years -- infections, pain, neuropsychiatric symptoms related to PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) and an autoimmune diagnosis shown by antinuclear antibodies. Since 1938, those with the symptoms called “autism” have been put on a spectrum, from low functioning to high functioning. It is very possible that their functioning had everything to do with a dysfunctional microbiome."
Here is a good video by Stephanie Seneff on the association between glyphosate, vaccine constituents, gut bacteria and autism:

rowingmom got a reaction from Jaysmom in Why fever causes symptom remission
Although in this article they mention improved socialization, even DD herself noticed a decrease in ticcing and other PANS symptoms during a fever.
The researchers found that without interferon gamma, signals in a brain region called the prefrontal cortex run rampant, and mice tend to be asocial. The prefrontal cortex is involved in social behavior, and is thought to be overactive in some people with autism. “We show that an immune molecule directly controls brain circuits through neurons,” Kipnis says.
...This suggests that interferon gamma normally dampens brain signals in this region — and that it affects social behavior. Replenishing the spinal fluid of the mice with interferon gamma is enough to restore social behavior in the mice...The findings may explain the observation that some children with autism seem to become more sociable when they have a fever, Kipnis says. Elevated levels of molecules such as interferon gamma accompany fevers.
In that same article, I posted two studies that seemed related to each other, and to my daughter. The first one showed "EtHg [THIMEROSAL] decreases IFN-gamma release". Further reading showed that IFN-gamma has antiviral activity and also important immunoregulatory functions. It is a potent activator of macrophages, has antiproliferative effects on transformed cells and it can potentiate the antiviral and antitumor effects of the type I interferons." Another study I have since discovered from the same year Megan was born, 1993, details this same phenomenon: "mercury interferes with T cell IFN-gamma production by affecting the intracellular availability of GSH."
A comment below the article written by "Tim" is interesting:
There are a number of herbs that increase IFN-gamma, such as guduci (which curiously enough was highly recommended by a commenter here to heal ADD).
Stephen Buhner recommends using adaptogens instead of just trying to increase INF-gamma, because chronically high IFN-gamma causes its own problems. So his suggestion (in his book Healing Lyme) is to use Withania Somnifera (Ashwaghanda), Rhodiola, Licorice, Scutellaria Baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), and Astragalus. These all raise low levels and lower high levels. Give Ashwaghanda at night; Licorice in the morning; the others 3 or 4 times per day. Licorice should only be used short-term, the others can be used indefinitely.

We use astragalus 500 mg 3x weekly.

rowingmom got a reaction from Lauriel in Bartonella treatment?
DD13 was treated with biaxin/rifampin for one year and then the LLMD added other abx to the mix because DD couldn't get past 80% improvement (malarone, tindamax, azithromycin, minocycline, plaquinel). When we weaned DD was still at 80%. The only significant improvement we saw with the additional abx was an improvement in cognition with malarone.
Frankly, Buhner's herbal bartonella protocol has worked better than abx ever did. Especially houttuynia which is pretty specific for that infection.
Buhner says that the protocol can be used along with antibiotic treatment, and will in fact decrease the likelihood of abx resistance developing.
Research is ongoing, this is the most up to date protocol:
    • Sida acuta tincture (from Woodland Essence or julie@gaianstudies.org) ¼ tsp 3x day for 30 days
    • Hawthorn tincture, same
    • Japanese knotweed, (tincture, same dose (from same sources as Sida acuta, above), or capsules from Green Dragon Botanicals 2 capsules 3x daily)
    • EGCG 400mg +- daily
    • Houttuynia (Yu Xing Cao – 1st Chinese Herbs, powder – use “LYME” code at checkout for 10% off) 1 tbl daily
    • L-arginine 5000 mg daily in divided doses
    • Milk Thistle seed, standardized, 1200 mg daily
    All for 30 days.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have active herpes, chicken pox, or shingles DO NOT USE L-arginine.
These recommended dosages are pretty high; we are only using 1/4 of what is suggested, except for Japanese knotweed which we use at full dosage.
    We omit l-arginine entirely.
We did eventually discover that an negative-testing (through Igenex), asymptomatic babesia/protozoan infection was holding back DD's complete recovery from her bartonella/PANS symptoms.
On a whim I trialled a combination cryptolepis/sida/alchornea herbal tincture which produced immediate babesia herx symptoms (air hunger, chest pressure, sighing, dry cough, thigh pain), at which point DD was clinically diagnosed with babesia as well.
The addition of babesia herbs to the bartonella protocol has recovered her completely, although we remain on continuous low dose.

DS has been doing great for 2 years now, but with odd little bumps in the road of hyper/moody/anger moments that would last maybe a 1/2 day or at best a week (rare). Even on the clean diet. I think the missing link was the sensitivity to food coloring. I have never seen him smoother.
Still cant wrap my brain around this...but started twin brother for dairy, egg, gluten treatment.

Our LLMD originally used biaxin/rifampin to treat DD's bartonella infection.
It produced herxing (die-off) symptoms which included increased fatigue, shin pain, emotional lability and headache. We were on vacation during the herx and we ended up having to get a wheel chair to get her from place to place (or around museums etc.).
Be aware of the possibility of an increase in symptoms or the development of new ones, which might be an indication of other underlying infections.

I agree with dasu. If treating PANDAS is not working, you need to investigate PANS triggers. Bartonella, babesia, and with seizures, ehrlichia. Aggression and raging is often caused by bartonella infection.
Please don't give up. Your child will improve when you target the proper infections.
Check for methylation defects, which can be caused either by genetic deletion or simply result from the methylation cycles being overwhelmed by toxins (produced either by bacterial die-off or by pesticides/metal adjuvants in vaccinations).
Try to eat as organically as possible. Glyphosate acts as both an antibiotic (will kill beneficial gut bacteria which is a significant part of the immune system) and a mineral chelator (will tie up essential minerals found in both plant and animal food, rendering it unavailable for absorption).
Be aware than almost all conventional legumes and grains are sprayed with glyphosate (RoundUp) before harvest to help to uniformly dry the plants. If wheat, beans etc. don't say "organic", they are likely sprayed. GMO's get a double whammy.
Most GMO's are grown to feed CFAO animals. Glyphosate is stored in their tissues and we eat it when we eat conventionally raised meat. Try for grass fed.

This is a very bad study. 12 weeks of antibiotics does not constitute long term treatment for someone with Lyme disease for years. I had Lyme disease undiagnosed for 9 years, and was treated by a LLMD for 4 years with excellent improvement. I am off antibiotics now and doing well. 12 weeks of antibiotics is nothing for someone with chronic Lyme. Infectious disease doctors are some of the worst for posting studies nay saying treatment of chronic Lyme. There is hope. I am proof of it.

rowingmom got a reaction from ibcdbwc in Borderline ASC but could be dyspraxia
These were many of DD14's symptoms exactly.
Every single one of them resolved with treatment for the lyme coinfections bartonella (with antibiotics) and babesia (with herbs only), speech therapy, OT and PT. Her long term memory remains exceptional.
In our case each of these symptoms were medical issues associated with her infections. None were "psychiatric" or related to "autism", although she did have a diagnosis of Asperger's at one point.
DD's anxiety and panic attacks were caused by bartonella, and resolved pretty much immediately with antibiotics specific for that infection.
Her oral apraxia and motor delays started with her 15 month MMR and required several years of speech therapy (PROMPT method which retrains muscle awareness), PT and OT (for hand writing and other fine motor skills) to overcome.
Loss of motor function is one of the symptoms of PANS/PANDAS and DD lost obvious writing/drawing skills with flares of her infections.
Her inability to follow simple instructions (let alone multistep ones) was due to brain inflammation which produced her symptoms of encephalitis (light, sound, touch sensitivities, ADHD, stiff neck, headaches). Treatment for bartonella helped here, but it wasn't until we included babesia herbs that her executive function blatantly improved.
Because of her ADHD symptoms she was highly distractible by any and everything, and problem solving and especially math was an issue. Every night I sat with her and we would review the next days math - that way I could introduce new concepts and if she was too distracted in class to comprehend, at least she would remember some of it from the night before. She had an IEP with accommodations for extra time, fewer test questions, removal from class with supervision to keep her on task. She sat behind a screen so that she wouldn't be visually distracted and wore ear buds to decrease sound distractions. From JK - Grade 1 she wore a weighted vest.
She was extremely disorganised. I had to go to school every day (Grades 2-5) to clean up her desk and collect homework, find out what was on the agenda for the next day as well so I could introduce new concepts to her.
I had to dress her and brush her teeth daily because she was too distracted to do so herself. No amount of reminding would work. She had no concept of time and would need someone to take her to the bathroom at school and remind her to go back to class. She had to eat lunch with the remedial class because she would forget to eat.
It was a hard, hard time and I know exactly what you are going though. I am not the same person I used to be and I continually worry that she will relapse although she has been asymptomatic for a couple of years now.
I spend entirely too much time on the computer reading alternative medical sites and have little time/patience for frivolities any more.
    Take care.

You can't allow your children to eat pesticide laden crap and expect their gut microbiome (and thus immune response) to function.
Environmental toxins (and that includes vaccinations) are slowly killing our children and producing improper immune response. We all need to WAKE UP to this fact.
We need to detoxify them (see Gerson in the video) and support proper immune response using nutritionally dense diet (see Terry Wahls). The problem is not the infections.
Thanks for the video sf_mom. I have been contemplating prophylactic Sota for a while, even though DD14 is now totally asymptomatic.

For that reason it would be best to figure out which infections you are dealing with. As you say, viruses will not respond to abx, nor will every bacterial infection respond to the abx regularly given for strep-induced PANDAS.
If you feel that viral infection is the trigger, treat the virus.
I would try finding something other than an antibiotic to function as an anti-inflammatory. It's just not worth destroying your gut microbiome when there are other options.

DD14 uses cordyceps (1/4 tsp 3x daily), with no autoimmune or herxing issues. As with any herb, start slowly (maybe 1/8 tsp) and gradually increase if there are no negative (or herx) reactions.
I was hesitant to start it at first because I saw some mention of lead contamination. But that was from the lead wires placed in the bodies of the harvested caterpillers (to increase weight and thus price). The brand we use is grown on rice.
Lyme, bartonella and babesia are so immune suppressive that any treatment protocol needs to include immune support in my opinion.

I second LLM's opinion, and also disagree with your doctor.
Because PANS is not caught early doesn't mean all hope is lost.
Our daughter's PANS symptoms started in 2008. We didn't find the cause (bartonella) until 2011. We didn't use steroids or IVIG because they were not available (or financially doable) for us. We did use 2 years of multiple/combination antibiotics, and also addressed nutrition (Terry Wahls autoimmune paleo) and methylation (MTHFR deletion) with supplementation.
DD has gone from being unable to function in a classroom, being unable to follow simple repeated instructions and raging with frustration because of it to a B+, A student, capable of doing her own work and comprehending new concepts (math, science etc.) within the classroom setting.
Her ADHD, Asperger's, Tourette's and sensory processing disorder symptoms have all resolved.
It is possible, we are doing it. DD is not 100% (she does have some residual herxing with changing herbal protocols, and her bartonella titers are still positive), but has been 95% for the last 6 months off abx.

Congenitally passed lyme or coinfections could be the issue for your daughter. Our LLMD diagnosed DD14 with such after clinically diagnosing me with bartonella as well.
As I have treated DD with bartonella and babesia antimicrobial herbs, I have treated myself as well with the same dosages and symptoms have improved dramatically.
My "menopause" symptoms (diagnosed by both a PCP and an endocrinologist) which started shortly after DD was born have resolved. These included vertigo, palpitations, hot/cold flashes, tingling extremities, headache, almost continuous flu-like feeling, derealisation, brain fog, panic/anxiety attacks, loss of cognitive/executive function (especially multitasking) ie. getting lost going to the grocery store and forgetting how to spell simple words like "apple", forgetting how to turn off a light switch, word drop, joint pain in the lower back and elbows, raging, fatigue so significant that I could not walk up stairs without sitting down, insomnia. And more, but it's been so long now since I have had these symptoms that I don't care to try and remember the rest.
Many of DD's initial symptoms were various motor delays and sensitivities to stimulus.
For your allergic-type reactions I would investigate Mast Cell Activation Disorder:

Both my children understand the effects of glyphosate on the gut microbiome, and both are very happy that we are modifying our diets to avoid it. Glyphosate is most often found in GM and conventional grains and legumes where it is used either before planting, during plant growth or before harvest to produce uniform die-down.
If he can't make it through the papers himself, sit down with him and explain it.

Lyme tests are notorious for false negatives, and so they can be misleading. If they ran an Elisa or a Western Blot through a lab other than Igenex, I would re-run the testing using Igenex and include coinfection testing.
