  1. Hello everyone!

I have been doing a lot of internet research for my son who just turned 6. Since July 2016 he has had 5 cases of rectal strep.

At first, I was really just looking for reasons why it would keep coming back... Then I discovered tons of info about PANDAS.

A little background: My 6 year old has always been a quirky, mellow guy. A lot of the symptoms I'm now realizing are cyclical and coincide with his strep outbreaks (or just before the strep would appear). I honestly, thought that this was just the way he was and I needed to accept it. Until his Montessori school teacher AND public school teacher both asked me if something was going on in the last couple weeks with him. With his most recent strep diagnosis (yesterday), I mentioned to his pediatrician some of the "odd" symptoms I was noticing. Chewing on his clothes, skipping meals, tattling on himself (and everyone really), not wanting to go to school because he is too smart (he has never been cocky this way), and crying at the drop of a hat. He has also suffered from night terrors and extreme fatigue. She mentioned PANDAS, but wants to see if the Clindamycin will kick the strep and then maybe it won't come back? The other 4 times he's been on antibiotics they prescribed cefdinir. The strep rash would go away and then it would keep coming back. She said some kids are carriers and might need to be on a low dose of antibiotics through the winter. After reading some of the posts on here I am not sure if this would be the best course of action, or if I should take him to a specialist? Certainly, a lot of the cases are far more extreme, but is it really wise to "wait and see" if it gets to that point?

I feel I should also mention that my son was sick from the age of 6 months until he was 3 years old. He had recurrent ear infections, and finally had tubes put in. This stopped the infections, and he was also diagnosed with IgA deficiency. We worked with CHOP immunology and his numbers eventually stabilized. They said he had grown out of the deficiency and was lucky.

Any ideas or input would be much appreciated! Thanks for reading.

    Sara
