Yes, very common. Immune system is distracted by an actual infection.

Not only is this a PANDAS forum, it is also a PANS/Lyme forum.

Infection with Lyme and several of the coinfections (bartonella, mycoplasma, viruses) can result in PANS/PANDAS symptoms. Strep does not need to be involved.

Early on, before treatment for Lyme/co, DD13 (then 9) developed strep which exacerbated her PANS symptoms. Treatment for strep resolved those symptoms but as soon as PenVK was discontinued her symptoms returned.

Another round of PenVK again resolved symptoms, but only for 4 days. On day 5 all of her PANS/PANDAS symptoms, along with a sore throat, returned while still on the antibiotic.

Swab indicated the problem was not strep.

Further investigation into both physical and psych symptoms on this forum lead me to seek help from a LLMD (Lyme Literate Medical Doctor) who tested DD through Igenex. She returned positive for bartonella; which is notorious for both supressing immune response (ie allowing other recurring infections) and for producing psych symptoms.

Sore throat is a symptom of bartonella, as is encephalitis which will produce symptoms of brain inflammation including light/sound sensitivities, sore/stiff neck, eye and ear pressure.

I would not assume your issues are only caused by strep.

It seems more than coincidental that so many PANS/PANDAS kids have positive Bartonella tests . My kid's came back positive the first try. Not happy to have such an infection, but it helps to know what infection to fight.

    Hi,

Well we got a script for 21 days for Mino and Ripfampin. Not sure whether it is going to be extended. Also using Biocidin protocol, and ordered Buhner herbs in case the abx is not extended and cannot find a Dr. This is an acute infection, why is this so difficult?

Try a methylated b-complex for a few days. We use children's Oxylent. My daughter can't have nitrous because of the c6447 (I think that's the snp ) snp she has.

A neighbor family of 4 (who spend most of their time in NC) and 3 of their recent house guests all were diagnosed with strep on the last two days.

The doctor they went to said that it is rampant right now and presenting in strange ways.

Two kids came in who tested positive and their only symptom was rectal itching.

Ok, this sounds nuts, but can strep live in water? There is a popular place to swim that is brackish (intercoastal waterway)but very shallow and very warm this year. I recently read an article where several people got staph infections from walking in the surf on the gulf side (we live on the Atlantic side).

sarojane got a reaction from mmiglio in NAC dosing and side effects?
My husband has brain issues, and bought NAC. One of the benefits he had read was to fight off colds. My daughter and I had come down with bad colds (pre pandas ) and my daughter was very sick to her stomach post NAC. I didn't feel great either. After that he poked a little deeper into NAC info and it can damage the mucosa lining of the digestive tract which is the exact opposite of what will make someone with PANDAS well.

My 8 yo dd is on day 6 500 mg Augmentin.

The symptoms seemed better at first but now seem like they are ramping up. More emotional upheaval, urinary frequency, negative thoughts.
Earlier she had a leg pain that was excruciating and brought her to tears on her calf.
Is this a normal reaction? Should the neurological symptoms be improving by now.

Thanks for any and all advice
