  1. We had a appt with our natropath yesterday so do some simple allergy testing, She just did one that worked on him holding the food or item and used a machine that detects vibration or something like that (i will be getting more in depth allergy testing done soon)

anyway she tested him on fish oil and he did react to it. So i'm glad that i took him off it after roughly 14 days a couple of weeks ago as i felt it really made his vocal tic worse.

My question is would it be likely that he would also react to flaxseed oil? I didn't have any with me to so she could test him but he has been on it for about a 14 days he has all these new tics i've never seen before, he has always been really mild in motor tics.

Do some kids have trouble with omega's in general? or should i try something else like Krill oil?

Hi Logismum, would you explain more about the allergy test which your child has done? We have IgE test here which is to draw blood. I don't know how the allergy test you describe comparing to the IgE test? Thank you!

  2. Hi,

Has anyone seen an increase in tics when initially giving B vitamins, particularly B6?

If so, has it gone away after continuing the vitamin.

I know my son needs all these supplements he proved deficient but he can't seem to tolerate them - even what I would consider the cleanest ones.

Do any of you just supplement through food?

    Thx.

What kinds of tics are he experiencing?

  3. I don't really know if it's helping with tics as such as we started it around 2 weeks after my son started vocal ticcing. Our Natropath put us onto it because she says it's just a good all rounder multivatamin thats made for brain fuction. We have been on it about 6-8 weeks and my son is 6.5yrs old. We have also made many dietary changes for him. It's hard to know if he would be way worse without it all. Our biggest challenge atm is getting his gut healthy. We are at the very begining of the journey and don't have a diagnosis of Ts just anxiety with tic disorder that was given at around 4.5 - 5yrs. We have also just included another vitamin called inhinbin 2 this week that includes other viatmins like vit c, B6 etc.

I have looked up Bonnie's supplements before and am considering them for future use but was unsure on how we get them here in Australia?

Thank you Logismum. Bonnie's supplements allow to ship to Australia, just select the country you want to ship.

  4. My son was diagonsed with Tourettes in July 2011.

He had extremely loud vocal tics, which were very challenging. I would be up every night in tears reading forums, blogs and in search of answers.

We have been seeing an integrative doctor for 9 months to try to reduce/minimize tics through diet modification and supplements.

For the first time in a very long time, my son's vocal tics have declined by 80% and the tics are not very noticeable. The decrease came 1-2 days after he started taking a GABA chewable supplement. In addition to GABA, my 8 yr old son is also taking magnesium, fish oil, iron and vitamin D. He is also on a Gluten Free diet, artificial, color and MSG free diet.

It's been 2.5 weeks and things seem to be the same. It's the best feeling I have had over 1.5 years and I'm praying that the supplements continue to be effective long term. I wanted to share because this blog has done so much for me on a mental level.

I will do my best to provide updates on this supplement.

Thank you for commenting on GABA. Looking forward to see more updates on the supplements your child is using.

  5. Hi,

My child is on rotation diet, which has limited him a lot of food, plus multivitamin from Bontech supplement, probiotic and taurine. Therefore, his tics are no longer waxing and waning like he was 3 years ago before he started the rotation diet. His tics will be aggravated only if he eats the wrong food, or try the wrong supplements. He is still struggling on compulsion and hyperactive, which magnesium and fish oils cannot help him. I read that some people do not have to following the diet so strictly when they are late teen. Some people said TS is life long. Some said 75% of people who has TS will overcome during adulthood. Some said rotation diet can help people get well in 2 years. What do you think? My child is still on strict rotation diet. Does he need to be on the strict diet for his whole life? Can tics diminish during adulthood? How about compulsion and hyperactive?

    Thank you very much!

  6. thanks everyone, there are just so many choices it is overwhelming. Hard here in Oz to find a practitioner to guide you through it unfortunately. I am reluctant to try too much as although I know these supplements are natural, Im sure some of them can also have detrimental effects. I dont want to do more damage ! Logismum, have you had any success with that multi yet ? I looked it up tonight and yes it does look very much suited to TS with the inclusions in it....

    thanks again everyone :)

Logismum, can my child who is nine takes Cognisese, the one you recommended to zinto and your child is taking as well, along with multivatimin? I also interest in knowing if your child has any success on Congniese? Thanks!

  7. Hi there

I am probably asking a question I have asked before but just looking for reconfirmation re magnesium. My son is taking approx 3/4 of a teaspoon of natural calm every morning and having an eps salt bath most nights. So far this has seemed to keep things at bay ( well we think it has it is hard to measure) He is 6 and weighs 25kg....should I be giving him more than this - gradually increasing dose or this an ongoing dose ? The reason I ask is he is suffering a bit of a tic explosion at the moment so I am looking at what to start with him.

It is very overwhelming as I read to know where to start in terms of supplements...I have a list of approx 50 that I have read have helped some people. I keep hearing repeatedly that a good multi and maybe fish oil, taurine would be good ? I have had the bonnie grimaldi supplements in the cupboard for a while and was holding off using them until we seemed to need them. Do you think I should just start these along with the natural calm and bypass all the others I have read about ?

Where I live in Australia there are not a lot of practictioners out there with any experience or even knowledge of TS, so to do this under someones guidance is difficult.

We have cleaned up his diet A LOT and on the weekend he had a few parties and would have consumed a lot of 'party food' considering his diet doesnt contain much of that stuff anymore. Sausage sizzle, a soft drink, a few chips, birthday cake, fish and chips amongst other things. Now the tics have increased significantly - I cant help but think it is quite connected. It is a tough gig with a 6 year old - he hates missing out and I hate to constantly be depriving him. but what do you do ?!

really appreciate anyones feedback re natural calm dose and supplement suggestions.tonight I bought a tub of magnesium capsules - it says each capsule contains magnesium as amino acid chelate 150mg. WOuld this be worth giving him with the NC or separately or not at all ?

thanks so much in advance :)

I think different kids react differently on the supplements. My child use bonnie supplement. He does well with it without any tics trigger. However, the natural calm or plain magnesium supplements do not help him. Based on my understanding, something that help ADHD may or may not help TS. My child cannot tolerate any fish oil which his tics will just be aggravated. Taurine and probiotic which my son is having helps his tics a lot along with strict diet. Can you limit your child to have certain kinds of food to eat during party?

  8. Thank you JosyJoy and Chemar. I know I have to get his teeth fixed so hopefully he won't have any reaction. He does seem though to have aggravation with any dental work including cleanings hence me being so worried :(

If he can wait, I suggest you have him to do one tooth fixing first. Then watch his reaction on tics, and how he overcomes over the time. And then wait for few weeks to do the next fixing.

  9. Hi,

First off, I am so happy to have this forum.

I have really found a lot of great information and comfort from so many of the people here trying to help one another and our children.

I do have a question though and some people may already know that I have a 4 year old who has many dental caries - we think malabsorption and weak enamel. His tics started a few weeks AFTER a fever brought on by his first extraction (not sure if it was coincidence, a bacteria or maybe the conscious sedation/midazolam affect) but regardless we are still dealing with his teeth.

Anyways, he has several teeth that need to be filled.

With so many reactions he has to certain foods, supplements, I am concerned he will have a reaction to the filling material.

I am going to have him tested for biocompatible materials and I have heard that diamond lite is the most compatible of all the materials and least toxic.

Has anyone had an experience with having their teeth filled and did they have another other issues like worsening of tics or conversely no worsening once the teeth were filled.

Thanks so much. I just feel stuck. I know I have to get his teeth fixed but at the same time don't want to aggravate his ticcing even more.

    Hi,

When my son did the extraction, and teeth cleaning, it did aggravate his tic, but the tics diminished after 2 weeks. I think you son will be too once he stops doing it. If he really need to get his teeth fixed, there will be traded off. But good thing is it will get better on tics. Don't worry.

  10. My son has benefited greatly from Epsom Baths and still takes them.

Nightly when needed is fine, otherwise a few times a week.

The magnesium in the salts is a relaxant and of course also provides transdermal magnesium which people with TS seem to benefit from

The sulfate (sulphur) is a detox and has other health benefits too

Epsom bath seems to help calm tics and restlessness, and promote peaceful sleep

We use 2 cups epsom in a full tub of water, so 1 cup is best for a half tub.

When my son doesn't have time or inclination for a full soak, he uses his Homedic foot bath with 1/2 cup epsom and finds this very soothing

Thank you! This is helpful information. I didn't know the ingredient of the Epsom salt could be that useful. I will have my child to try it.

  11. Hi, I have been giving my son Epsom salt baths since he was 18 months, years before his tic if began (he is now 4, turning 5). How old is your child?

I usually put a cup of Epsom in his bath water at night before bed. As far as frequency, I usually give him a nightly Epsom as I was instructed by a doctor that but just recently someone else mentioned 3 times a week at most.

I definitely notice an improvement in him. Now my son is not hyper but he does have restless legs and twitches quite a bit during his sleep which the baths greatly help.

This is why we started in the first place.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you! This is helpful information, and I will have my child try that too.

  12. Hi

just so I understand...when you refer to "cooking oils" are you saying you are trying to fry the food in these oils?? or are you giving them as a supplement?

If you are cooking in them, just be aware that most oils change dramatically in nature when heated and can actually become unhealthy. This includes coconut oil and flaxseed oil, which are best used unheated for their health benefits.

We don't fry anything and if we saute` it is in a little extra virgin olive oil or ghee.

If you are giving the oils as a supplement and seeing bad effects then your child may be allergic or intolerant to them.

There are a lot of anecdotal reports of people with TS who are fine eating fish but who react very negatively to fish oil, often with increased tics. usually they may tolerate flaxseed oil better, but if not, freshly ground flaxseeds can still give t he healthy Omega benefits.

Extra virgin coconut oil (we like Nutiva) has tremendous health benefits and gives a lovely flavor to food...but again, dont heat the oil! just stir a teaspoon or two into the food. It is great stirred into warm oatmeal or veggies or soups, and has antimicrobial properties as well.

Thank you! Most of the time, I just mixed the oils with the food without cooking the oil, sorry for not clarify. But may think about coconut oil. He is having coconut milk. But oils discourage me a lot.

  13. Hi, I seem to have the exact same problem...I keep on taking away and reintroducing different oils but same reaction.

I would be interested to know too if anyone has had this problem and found a solution.

Do you give the oils separately, to see if your child can tolerate them or do they usually come in a combination oil?

Have you tried coconut oil? I am going I try that next and see if it might help. Please keep me posted!

    Thank you!

Yes, I just gave my child oils separately. I was thinking to give him coconut oil, but it just discourages me after all the trial.

  14. Hi,

I have tried many kinds of cooking oils and fish oils like grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, sesame oil, MCT oil, cod liver oil, flaxseed oil, and sardine oil but none of them work for my child who has Tourette. It just aggravates his symptoms like eye tics more, become very irritate, very hyper, night terror, not able to fall asleep at night. He is not sensitive to the food listed above. For example, he is eating cod fish, but once he has the cod liver oil, he has tics and irritation. I was thinking to add fat to his diet for his weight gain, but those oils can't help. Can anyone tell me why? Is there any other oil that you think it can be good for tics and mood?

    Thank you very much!
