  1. wow...it does sound like an allergic reaction to figs maybe? or that some ingredient in your new flour mix triggered him. Fig allergies are not uncommon. hope it settles quickly for him. have you done a detoxing soak in epsom salts tub? that may help some
  2. hmmmmmmmm I am not surprised there is waxed ticcing with theanine as it is closely related to glutamine. also, it stimulates dopamine it may good for many things and it does seem it stimulates both GABA and serotonin, which is likely why naturo recommended it for OCD/anxiety but..................the trade off is possible tic triggers here is what Wiki says about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theanine here is the iherb info (interesting that it is high in black tea...maybe why I find tea so very soothing and calming where as coffee with same caffeine or even less than tea I am told makes me wired!! iHerb info on theanine
  3. Hi sniffing & coughing tics can sometimes follow a cold. again that "tic where it is felt" phenom my son definitely "catches tics" I noticed you said a lot of swimming? my son has MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) and chlorine is something he is hypersensitive too. just something to keep an eye on in case your child may have reacted to it too
  4. hi bmom we used NOW L-carnitine at 500mg per day some people prefer the acetyl- L - carnitine we used just the regular L iherb.com has lowest prices on NOW products IMO
  5. Hi not sure if you have seen our useful sites thread pinned above but maybe you will find resources there to help http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1963 hope that helps a bit and all the best
  6. he had it every day for a number of months and then after that we would give it for about 2 weeks whenever needed. He went through a period of very mild tics so hadnt used it in over a year. He had some waxing after we were hit by the hurricanes in 2004(no electric for a week, very hot, lots of stress as house damaged etc) and we tried the l-carnitine again and it made him feel edgy and weird so he refused to ever have it again. could well have been a hyper reaction to it during a stressful time for all I know however, when he needed it before it sure helped VERY MUCH!!!
  7. hi kallik if he is reactive to taurine then mag taurate may not be good for him one of the things i really always try to emphasize here is that just because something works for one, doesnt mean it will for another each person's metabolism and their own situation is unique so one should always add new things at minimum dose and then work up if no reaction noted. (as an example, i know some are having success with NAC but i have been advised against it for my son because it boosts immune system (not wanted because of his auto-immune condition re the crohn's and also it reduces mucous...again something not wanted re the crohn's where he needs the mucous protective coating)
  8. that's great Rossina and yes, I would not be surprised if the L carnitine is what has helped! it helped my son with blinking and with vocals. He cant seem to tolerate it anymore (now 18yo) but back then around 11-13yo we used it whenever his eye or vocal tics waxed
  9. here in Florida with the 100% humidity, 4th July results in a thick smog that lingers for hours The thought of that toxic stuff settling in the water and plants and never mind the critters is bad enough but what of those sitting out at these displays. I wonder how many people get sick after the shows and dont realize what it is from.
  10. ((((Jeanne))))) so sorry to hear it has intensified. it does sound like the flashing of the fireworks has been a trigger. hopefully he will stabilize quickly. Have you done some searches here on Claire's past posts on photosensitive induced tics? she has a lot of good info best you can do is to take a deep breath and remember "this too shall pass" and try to keep the stress level down for all of you, as the more you focus on the tics likely the worse it gets. Your lil guy is likely very confused by it all too. just keep doing the stuff that has helped in the past and hopefully this waxing phase will be over quickly
  11. Hi ok I am not a PANDAS parent but one thing I know is the neuro was not correct in telling you it is "nothing serious" and it will go away on its own. I am puzzled too that your pediatrician feels illness from a bacterial infection can be resolved by "talking to someone"?????????? when there is a flare up, its likely either that the strep is active or that there has been some exposure to it. A flare of OCD is usually a clear indicator!!! antibiotics are the first line of defense for most PANDAS kids I REALLY hope you will get in to see the other neuro ASAP and personally would not waste my time with the first
  12. Hi Tracey nope, my son (and his brother) reached 6 ft bf 18th birthday and had no growth probs you should ask the Doc to check your son's growth hormone etc levels to be sure that isnt a factor
  13. hmmm i tried to merge the threads to incorporate the poll into this one but the poll you created went poof. sorry Greyhound anyway here are the stats for my son male now age 18--has reacted negatively to fishoil since 10yo #5=does better with flaxseed oil than with fishoil
  14. fireworks are a trigger for my son too, both the visual and the sounds. when younger he got an OCD linked tic of banging his ears after the noise of the fireworks at disney and yes they have always triggered blinking nd vocal tics too for him. we dont attend fireworks shows cos of it.
  15. Hello Guy you are right to be cautious of the zoloft. some people just do not react well to SSRIs. My son was one(he took luvox) there are very effective non SSRI supplements to help with OCD here is a bit on them. (One that isnt included there is methionine, which my son has found very helpful) http://healthlibrary.epnet.com/GetContent....;chunkiid=39026 we also have a useful sites and resources sticky on the OCD forum here http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1963
  16. yes, my son gets tics triggered by sensations. it is the reason he cuts all labels out of clothing to prevent neck irritation and wears socks inside out cos of the seams irritating i have long noticed a link between his sensory integration issues and his tics and that other thread where we were discussing the "tic where it is felt" indicates to me this is a common observation re why the abdominal tic in the tub I dont have an answer, but my son has had gagging tics that sometimes caused slight regurtitation
  17. Hi Mary yes catapres IS clonidine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. sorry no, The parasite dx was 1997. it was two years BEFORE he had the dramatic depression/tic onset that we learned of the parasites. He had the antitox treatment at the time of parasite dx (ie when he was around 8yo) Looking back my son has always had tics and mood/OCD issues, but they manifested very noticeably and intensely just after his 10th birthday in 1999. it is believed that is when the TS gene "switched on" fully (I dont understand genetic mechanisms fully) He had antitox drops again in late 2005 and again in 2006 prior to getting the Crohn's dx which was actually the reason for his abdominal pain, bleeding etc. The parasites had likely been agravating the Crohn's that was as yet undx, as the antitox gave a period of remission from those symptoms. Apex makes an excellent range of Antitox products as well as other remedies. http://www.apexenergetics.com/catalog/home.../plex/aplex.htm
  19. one of the things I like about Candida Clear is its blend of things that are anti parasitic when we first started having radiogenic transdermal testing (I think they call it lots of other things now too) I was so surprised at parasites that were coming up for my son that I had some additional tests blood & stool tests run where possible and sure enuff...he had them! This was before the overnight switch on of intense depression and also tics that happened about 2 years later. The physician treated my son with a series of ANTITOX drops (Apex) and it really seemed to help based on his subsequent tests prior to the Crohn's dx we had more transdermal testing done and parasites showed and so son went on the drops again and again improvement although that was likely just getting rid of an additional irritant to the Crohn's condition candida clear has oregano oil in it, known to be an "all purpose" antiparasitic. (the oil alone is VERY VERY strong and even a drop in small glass of water is barely tolerable! it is so strong! so do be careful re kids with the pure oil!!!) but in the candida clear capsule its undetectable (except by the nice smell ) and I believe there are other oregano oil capsules and blends available (we also use the dried and fresh herb in cooking a lot, along with rosemary and garlic) green pumpkin seeds help with worms (yup, so many kids( and adults--) have 'em and dont even know it!)
  20. I do think the balance between what one takes in as food and what one supplements is important and also the balance of the varying nutritional elements with each other. When it comes to antioxidants, food really is the easiest and best source as so many fruits and veggies are loaded with them! the 2nd neuroscience product may have been a bad fit for your child cos of the 5HTP. For some it is a perfect fit and others get mega edgy on it. My son had such tremendous benefit from it when younger but cant go near it now!! I guess my question is....if the first neuroscience product was working well, why did the doc decide to add another etc? re enzymes and probiotics...as good and vital as they are for many, some people do seem to react. I still firmly feel the best probiotics are the natural ones like Kefir. since my sons Crohns dx he cant take either as they cause flare ups for him
  21. I use about a cup of creme for 1/2 cup epsom. I blend it into a tub of calendula creme, but really any pure cream is fine to use as long as you keep the water level down when dissolving the salt. The aquaphor cream can absorb liquid so is good for that but I dont know what all is has in it
  22. Hi if that pill is clonidine then IMHO stay far away from it! My husband has TS and a doc put him on clonidine for very high and erratic blood pressure and to help tics that had intensified after an auto accident I was very against it but he agreed to do a trial and it made him totally psychotic. he said he felt there was a "purple ooze " running down one side of his brain and he began obsessing over the tiniest things and building up anger and resentment for things from the past etc. It was very scary and it stopped as soon as we began the careful down titrating of dose to withdraw him from the drug. I have heard others say clonidine has helped them, and I am open minded that for some medications are of benefit. But honestly, and especially for a child, I would personally try everything possible and unless the tics are downright dangerous or seriously interfering with quality of life, I would urge caution and careful consideration, with knowledge of side effects beyond just the "oh side effects are rare" approach that most docs will give sorry this is one of my deep concerns as not only have I seen my TS husband have bad drug reactions, but my son went thru severe and disabling experiences with the tic and OCD meds that were tried on him and now is doing so well, med free, that I feel it I have to always urge people to investigate carefully before just trying these brain drugs on kids with developing brains. re the Epsom salts creme....yes, we find rubbing it in the area being most tic impacted is very good. Oral magnesium really is the fastest way to get the calming effect IMO, but the baths and creme are invaluable compliments
  23. as mentioned many times, my son has extreme sensitivity to chemicals from food additives to chlorine and so this website was interesting to me. http://www.ourlittleplace.com/mcs.html
  24. Hi and welcome in addition to the tests suggested above, I would also ask for Candida albicans testing. We had blood test but I know some docs prefer the stool test. you would also need to test for heavy metals (especially mercury) which can be done blood or hair analysis take a look thru our Essential Threads sticky as well as there are a number of important tests listed there http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2459 which includes a helpful thread from Claire on Testing 101 http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=755
  25. making your own Epsom salts cream is easy Mix 1/2 cup epsom salts into warm water in a small bowl, using as little water as possible, just enough to get it to dissolve, and then mix it into any cream of your choice. (mrs D recommended aquaphor or eucerin)
