May have found all the answers today....
Chemar replied to myrose's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
wow myrose.....what a path you have been on huh! Yet in a way you must almost feel a sense of strange relief at the new and large piece in the puzzle............ you know the last place we looked was a TS diagnosis. even though it is clear now that this is what my husband and his dad had disorders on the Tourette syndrome spectrum, yet we never realized the TS connection till my son was diagnosed and my husband had many remembrances of stuff he did as a kid. We had alwas thought my hubby and grandpa "eccentric" Truth be told, I did not know what Tourette was when a young boy in my sons elementary joined the class with TS. He and my son bonded and became friends. It was his parents who years ago, after my son had spent the weekend with them, told me they thought he had TS. I was rather indignant, stating my son had ADD, CAPD, SID etc.......which were his 4-5yo diagnoses............................... then came that time of his 10th birthday and the dramatic OCD/depression onset and the road to a diagnosis of the spectrum of disorders he has and the one for TS.... and the realizations that so much of what we had been labelling as "bad habits" or "disobedience" "difficult" etc were in fact truly things he "couldnt help" as he had told us time and time again I dont know clearly know the trigger....a number of things overlapped at that time..... but something switched on in my son overnight to bring out the full manifestations of his TS/OCD. I usually put those two together, although he has others, but I have realized that my son's tics and OCD are intertwined. I strongly feel that it is likely manifestations of genetic disorders can be triggered by so many things, vaccinations, microbes, illness, allergens and chemicals in food and environment, trauma(physical and emotional), sensory issues etc etc etc. A lot of those things mess with the immune system too I have often wondered why my oldest son never manifestTS, but youngest did, but I do see a mild OCD in oldest, and know I have that myself, as does my mom. I wonder too if maybe some things that I remember about cousins and an uncle on my dad's side could actually have been TS now. so for us, myrose, the possible genetic trail has a lot more componants that you are seeing with the knowledge that your dad possibly had TS, I do know tho that genetics can play a role even when you dont have manifestations in each generation or close relatives. I am not very genetically clued up but I do know it is likely all to do with which dominants and recessives combine and also with those subtle changes in the genes that occur and then blend in the new individual. anyway I am rambling....your post just reminded me so of the path we had been on before the TS dx praying for you as you continue toward that light at the end of the tunnel ((((myrose)))) (ps you may want to link to this thread on the TS forum too as I know members there who maybe dont read here will be very interested to hear the connection you have found. ) -
as my son has Crohn's disease(which is autoimmune) and Tourette Syndrome (genetically inherited from his dad/grandfather etc) I must say that before the crohn's manifest, I did not see what I have come to recognize as autoimmune reactions related to his TS...in fact quite the opposite. I think one also needs to be very careful to blanket all tic disorders as they have many different origins and solutions. Tourette Syndrome is known to involve malfunction at the dopamine level. Not all tic disorders are dopamine related from my understanding.

this is something best discussed with your physician the TSA has research studies on the effect of cannibis on tics. it is found to reduce them and a prescription medication, marinol, is used successfully by some in areas where it is approved. medically certified would probably be much safer than "street" varieties as the latter are now so "designer" genetically modified etc that they often have little resemblance to the natural form, and can actually cause paranoia, phobia, schizophrenic episodes....so please do be very careful

Hi and welcome I am very busy at work right now so forgive the short reply..... my son is almost 19yo and was dx with Tourette at age 10 we also tried a variety of meds with no real benefit but many bad side effects he has been on a natural plan since 2001 and his tics/OCD etc are so much improved. I based his plan on Bonnie's original one that she used for her child (long before the Bontech range) here is the basic plan he has been on (it is somewhat modified now as he also has Crohn's disease plus we have found some substitutes etc...will post more on the updates later) http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=687 hope that helps a bit. I am sure others will be along soon to share their experiences with you too!

The Treatments that have Helped My Son
Chemar replied to Chemar's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
bumping up for newbies who have asked about this -
((((((((((((Carolyn)))))))))))) try not to worry! you know you have done your best and fulfilled all requirements just try to go in as relaxed as possible and be as honest as possible, just like you have been in your post about it here. once you shine through in person, all will be fine! ps if she doesnt know about the TS or the baby then it may be wise to fill her in for greater understanding

thanks footballguy. We have not tried it and not sure son would be willing as so far every probiotic tried seems to cause increased Crohn's symptoms for him our theory is that for some reason any introduction of microbes, even good ones, seems to cause hypersensitive gut reaction for him. Whether this is related to the auto-immunity things with the Crohn's or something else, we dont know ..... so instead he is just eating very healthily and taking supplements with his daily soy protein/vitamin/mineral shake etc which seems to be controlling any candida problems. he takes monolaurin and candida clear for one week of every month now and, while we do see TS tic waxing every now and then , his Chrohn's really does seem under control, and overall tics and OCD in a stable phase he also drinks a lot of green tea which he feels really helps him overall. interesting that the kombucha is made from tea. I have a strong belief in tea's goodness with my British roots

when my son was on no dairy elimination diet we were told it was fine to use goat products. we used the cheese and the milk. Wholefoods Market stocks goatsmilk products

Hi and welcome good that you have Sheila's book to work from I dont know of the product you mention but did want to point out that Bonnie Grimaldi's Bontech supplements are specially formulated for TS www.bonniegr.com .....she has one called TSPlus which combines all the vits and minerals etc that she used in her original formula for her child. many of our members have seen much improvement with using them, although some have found increased tics with especially fishoil hope that helps I have a link in my signature to the plan I put together to help my son based on Bonnie's original formula

medication more enhanced while on vitamins?
Chemar replied to kimwal's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Kim, certain meds and supps do not mix well. eg especially amino acids and some herbs and even some fruits like grapefruit can interact with meds. here is a list on iHerb of possible interactions that may help you work this out -
sadly my son doesnt seem to be able to tolerate probiotics anymore (including yoghurt and kefir) as they appear to aggravate his Crohn's symptoms. not sure just why, but we have tested enough now to be sure. he was always able to handle them before (we use kefir mainly but also have used health store varieties) the rest of our family still used kefir and yoghurt

Hi myrose the only way you will have copies of your sent messages is if you check the box to save a copy in your sent folder at the time of sending it

here is that chart of common tics again and yup, the licking and touching others (nomatter where) are in there http://www.tourettesyndrome.net/Files/CommonTics.PDF I do think the touching is one of those times when tics and OCD morph very hard when the inappropriate ones manifest so I truly feel for you and hope this one passes quickly. CBT really did help my son in the substitution for the socially embarrassing tics and OCDs

Got irritated by my son's smelling tic
Chemar replied to patty's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
oh I absolutely agree there Linsey having a big announcement that way is not what I would advocate for. we left it up to our son to tell any of his classmates etc and we had his permission to discuss with teachers...which obviously became a necessity once we had him on the 504 my son actually abhors the term "special needs" and refuses to ever use it. The approach he took was to simply say on an as needed basis "I have Tourette Syndrome" and then explain tics to anyone who needed the understanding of why he was making sounds and movements Once he got to high school he no longer felt the need to explain to his peers as they really didnt seem to notice or if they did they did not comment. we found the middle school years the hardest in terms of peers and sadly private school kids were far more judgmental and teasing/bullying than he found when he switched to public school in 7th grade -
Pat I have to respectfully disagree with that My husband is in his sixties and has TS. He was in an autoaccident where someone smashed into the driver side and he has herniated discs etc. Ortho insisted on a five day prednisone burst to alleviate the sciatic pain/inflammation I pointed out the possible triggering of tics from steroids. Ortho told me just that! "it is small dose, tapers off over 5 days. wont do anything but good" Husband decided to try and is so very very sorry he did. my husband had HORRIBLE reaction to it and by day 3 was so ill we had to go to ER This was months ago and he STILL has not recovered His tics are worse than they have ever been in his entire life He also lost some cognitive ability PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE to anyone who suspects their child may have TS, be VERY VERY cautious about a steroid burst!!!! I am not saying that what happened to my husband will always happen to anyone who has TS and steroid burst. But honestly, I dont personally feel it is worth the risk to end up with what has happened to my husband. ):

yes, he has been on antibiotics very occasionally, most recently in 2006 on zithromax for the infected fistula related to his Crohn's. He noted an improvement in overall Crohn's symptoms then but we dont recall any specific improvement in tics or OCD. I should mention that at that time he was still suffering intense daily pain from the Crohn's and the stress of that had tics sky high since implementing the specific diet & supplement treatments over the past 2 years his Crohn's is really very subdued now and he no longer has pain. He takes monolaurin for one week of every month as natural antibiotic now

Got irritated by my son's smelling tic
Chemar replied to patty's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
we have always been totally open about my son's disorders and found it to be a positive approach to take based on reaction of his peers, teachers and others he comes in contact with. altho he has had his fair share of unpleasantness from others (more so sadly from adults than kids ) the overall response has been a good and understanding one he had a lot more problems at school when we were still all "in the dark" re what was going on with him as there was much misunderstanding from teachers and other kids -
nope...never have seen that in my son
