Best antibiotic for mycoplasma pneumonia?

Recommended Posts

I suspect my five year old has "walking pneumonia" - presumably caused by Mycoplasma pneumonia, but I don't know that for sure. His illness seems to be triggering a mild flare in my PANDAS kiddo.

So what's the best antibiotic for myco p? Have an appointment on Tuesday and want to ask the doctor for the best/strongest option.

Azithromycin is usual drug of choice for Atypical pneumonias (Mycoplasma is considered an atypical) or Doxycycline. My son failed on Azithromycin and had to take a Cephalosporin (Omnicef) to get well when he had Mycoplasma in summer of 2013. Took Z pack and remained sick with fever- no better. He is Penicillin allergic.

Glad you have an appointment coming up! Don't know if you're in the Midwest, but you've heard about that upper respiratory virus that's going through the schools, no (enterovirus)? Sounds as though it can be particularly nasty, especially for some kids. Take care, and don't mess around!

Our son did 9 months on azithromycin for mycoplasma. During that time, we saw brief improvement before his titers started rising. He switched to Biaxin this past January 250 mg a.m. and 250 mg p.m. He seemed to improve but his blood work this fall showed that his numbers were going up again and his tic was returning. Therefore, our doctor increased the dosage to 250 mg a.m. and 500 mg p.m. The tic seems to be gone so I am hoping that we are heading in the right direction. Next blood work to check on things will be in November and we see our LLMD for the first time in October. I will be curious to see if the LLMD adds something to bust through the biofilm so that the antibiotic will be more effective.
