Keflex as prophylactic?

Recommended Posts

Our daughter has been on Keflex 500mg twice a day since the start of the year to get her through a bad flare. Things seem stable now but after 3 years of treating just flairs we are ready to go with a prophylactic approach. For those that may have done so with Keflex should we wean to 500 mg once a day or 250 mg twice a day (does it matter if we do one dose or split over two?)? Or what did you have success with?

Sorry, haven't done Keflex prophylactically, but if you don't get a response specific to that, you can answer the question about splitting in two or not by finding out the half-life of that abx. If it has a long half-life (days) rather than a short one (less than a day), then splitting in two doesn't really matter. Now they can sort-of simulate long half lives with time-release meds - but they are of course more expensive.

My almost 8 year old has been taking Keflex prophylactically since January. He is taking 250mg 2x's per day. I have been told by the doctor that it has a short half life and that is why you need the second dose. I was even told to give the second dose earlier if child was going to be doing after school events, because it will have worn off after 8 hours. Hope this helps.
