Beware of Miralax! Anxiety, tics, aggression, rage

"Even though the label doesn't recommend MiraLAX for children under 17 and limits use to seven days, the parents Action News spoke with say pediatricians prescribe it like water, and for extended periods of time.

"Near psychiatric events with paranoia, mood swings, aggression, rage," parent Jeanie Ward said.

"All of a sudden, she started having this weird ticks," Saenz said."

Thank you for posting this - very, very interesting! If there were a way to undo the effect of the Miralax, any ideas on what that might be? Seriously, if anyone has any ideas, please post!

Adding, I found the article over at NYT with comments. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/06/science/scrutiny-for-a-childhood-remedy.html

This scares me. My dd4 has suffered from constipation and I was told to just keep giving her Miralax and that it was safe. I've been giving it to her for years on and off. I now think she has Pandas and it could be Miralax. I'm am so scared now and I don't know what to think. Is there any information about reversal and getting better if a child has issues related to Miralax?

Well it seems to be about toxicity, so detoxification would make sense. An integrative doctor or DAN doctor could probably provide the best guidance on how to safely detox the toxins in Miralax.

I would stop the Miralax immediately if you're suspicious of it contributing to her PANDAS/PANS. You can use natural constipation treatments instead. Magnesium, prune juice, and castor oil are three possibilities I'm aware of.

If you don't know of an integrative doc in your area, start a separate topic asking for recommendations in your area.

Thank you mama2alex. I will not be giving her Miralax anymore. I feel so stupid and guilty for having done so already. I was always told it was absolutely safe after I questioned it and I should have known better. I don't know if she has Pandas either. I will be taking her to get her blood work done this week so that we can determine if it could be Pandas. All I know is that my little girl is not well and something changed. I am so worried and feel so desperate right now. Her pediatrician told me that she is a believer of Pandas and will look into the connection even though she doesn't know much about it. I am so glad I found this forum in my search for answers because I'm learning so much from everyone here. I saw the Miralax warning and that freaked me out too since we've been using it. I am so scared right now and just looking for any bits of information to try and help my little girl. Thank you for responding to me. It really helps to have someone to talk to 😥

@Clt_mama

I had the recent epiphany that my son’s most severe PANS onset was caused by Miralax.  He has been receiving monthly  HD IVIG for encephalitis.  His tics are now gone, as well as 90% OCD.  MD agrees that Miralax triggered the encephalopathy.  The irony is that even his constipation was misdiagnosed.  He was having groin pain as a side effect of Metedate.  He still has ADHD symptoms, anxiety and sound sensitivity.  MD started him on SBI Protect to heal the damage of the Miralax.  It’s only been 3 days, so I’ll keep you posted.
