Depression: Free Articles & Premium Articles
|
Most
of us have experienced periods of the “blues” or times of temporary
grieving. A depressive illness is more serious, and just willing it
away, or expecting someone to “snap out of it” does not work.
There is new hope for this increasingly common disorder that
currently affects hundreds of thousands of children, and several
million adults. Natural therapies can now be used to treat
depression.
This disorder changes a person’s mental and emotional outlook, and
can result in sleep difficulties, increased physical symptoms, and
disruption of eating patterns. There are
three main types of depression.
Treatments have evolved over the last 40 years, first focusing on
psychoanalysis or counseling therapy, followed by drug treatment to
address brain chemical abnormalities.
Standard treatments with antidepressants come under increased scrutiny, particularly
for teens and children. This has placed a new emphasis on
natural therapies.
The good news is that nutritional supplements and other
complementary or alternative therapies can be used to help balance
brain functioning. New studies are being conducted every year that
help define these therapies.
Do you or someone you care about suffer from
depression?

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW |
|
Dr.
Doris Rapp has carried her message on the role of the environment
and children’s health
problems through the Donohue, Oprah!, Larry King Live, and Maury
Povich shows
as well as her best-selling books. In this interview she shares
insights of specific
interest to Latitudes readers, with a focus on Tourette syndrome. |
|
"I can’t speak for
all cases of Tourette syndrome (TS), but for a certain subgroup, TS is definitely
intertwined with allergy. When we eliminated the cause—the allergic response—there were
no TS symptoms left to
treat." |
